Just as the Bears were wrapping up pre-season, another distraction reared it's ugly head Friday morning. Lance Briggs formally requested a trade after he didn't receive a raise. The Chicago Tribune is reporting that Briggs' agent, the famous Drew Rosenhaus, sent an email to the Bears requesting the trade.
This comes at an interesting time since Briggs has 3 years left on his current contract. Briggs signed a 6-year, $36 million dollar deal in 2008.
$3.9 Million this season.
$4.0 Million in 2012
$6.5 Million in 2013
Instead of waiting until the regular season, Lance Briggs has waited just 9 days before the regular season to initiate. Even though I don't think the Bears should give into his request, trading Briggs away 9 days before the regular season would be disastrous to this team. This would force Brian Iwuh into a starting role along with Brian Urlacher and Nick Roach. Iwuh has played solid in the pre-season but, couldn't fill the void of a Lance Briggs departure.
Briggs is really losing the support of many fans. In 2008 when Briggs demanded a new deal, he received one. With 3 years left on his contract, he's demanding a raise or be traded.
